ABOUT

A refreshed take on a much loved earlier mural, Smug reimagines the story of St Enoch (also known as St Thenue, mother of Glasgow’s patron saint, St Mungo) through exquisitely detailed portraiture. Inspired by the reinterpretative narrative of Rebecca Sharp’s poetry play ‘Maiden Mother Mage’, the artist turns his focus to St Enoch’s later years in Glasgow. Her bold expression meets the viewer with a sense of courageous resilience in the face of unspoken adversity. A distinctive palette of greens and purples lends the work a contemplative, almost ethereal quality while anchoring the figure in her medieval origins. The framing of foxgloves—“fairy bells” or “witch’s thimbles”—adds an additional layer of myth and lore befitting the mural’s title.
